This period, in which death cases due to Covid 19 have increased again and we have left behind about 8 months in the fight against the virus, brings with it important threats to both our health and our skin, which is an important reflection of our health. While the use of masks and hygiene measures, which are indispensable for our health, cause persistent rashes, especially on our hands and face; These days, which we are slowly entering the winter season, show that we need to think once again about skin health with the new measures we will take.

The fact that we are indoors more often in the winter has brought us back to our agenda what we should pay attention to about our skin health. With the increase in the cases, the experts started to recommend even wearing a double mask, and the answer to the 5 questions that come to our minds about our skin, Dermatologist Assoc. Dr. Ahu Birol Kocaalp replied…

Do the treatment in the evening, do not use heavy cream before the mask!

How should our skin treatment and care be when using a mask?

Due to the fact that the skin is closed due to the use of masks, acne problems have increased especially in people with acne predisposition in the mouth and chin area. In addition, a disease that we call rosacea, which manifests itself with redness and inflamed spots, draws attention in this period. When our skin is covered with a mask, we sweat, our mouth and chin stay moist, which causes an activation in the microbes there, and inflammatory skin diseases are triggered.

For this reason, it would be right to consult a dermatologist without waiting for these ailments to worsen and to apply the appropriate treatment only in the evenings. However, instead of using heavy products before putting on a mask in the morning, it is sufficient to just clean the skin and apply sunscreen.

We should be very careful about the cleaning of the masks we use, changing them frequently or using them daily by cleaning them if the masks are not disposable. Let’s never forget that putting the mask on your arm, holding it under your chin, touching it with your hands, putting it somewhere and then using it again makes the mask a source of infection in itself…

Which supplements we use to get stronger against Covid 19 are also beneficial for our skin? What should we pay attention to when using supplements?

In this period, macro and micro nutrients needed by the body must be met in sufficient amounts for the development and maintenance of immune function.

It has been reported that vitamins such as A, C, D and E and minerals such as zinc, copper, selenium and iron are important in maintaining a healthy immune response. We need to consider that the excess of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K can do more harm than good.

The fact that we communicate more with Covid 19 through digital screens threatens our skin as well as our eyes in terms of the ‘damages of blue light’. What can we do to avoid this?

Smartphones, tablets, digital displays and television screens use LED artificial light sources. Blue light can cause skin aging, inhibit cellular renewal, and cause fine lines and dark spots to appear. To protect the skin from blue light, we recommend creams made of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that provide comprehensive protection against UV rays, because such mineral protectors reflect light, minimizing damage to our skin.

If there are spills that do not go away, be careful!

Which symptoms of Covid 19 on our skin require precautions?

We can see all the ‘skin rashes’ experienced in viral diseases in Covid 19, which is a kind of viral disease. It is not possible to detect a specific type of rash for Covid, a wide variety of rash types can be encountered here. Covid 19 can sometimes start with a skin rash, and sometimes these rashes can be encountered during the treatment in the hospital or in the intensive care unit.

The most common skin rash in Covid 19 findings is what we call ‘maculopapular rash’, and it occurs in the form of red, small pointy bumps that occur mostly on the body, upper body and arms. After that, the most common rash is chickenpox-like spots filled with water. Another form of rash is a skin disease called urticaria and popularly called hives. This is the third most common skin finding in the world.

One of the most important causes of these ailments is the discovery that the virus causes intravascular coagulation with Covid 19. For example, if the coagulation is very intense, the blood flow that we call necrosis can be seen in the hands and fingertips of the patients in the intensive care unit. According to a study conducted on Covid 19 patients, such skin rash findings are more common in advanced age. It is more common in patients who are 65 years of age or older and have more than one disease, such as blood pressure and diabetes. What I can recommend here is to consult a dermatologist if the rash is getting worse day by day.

Here are 6 tips to protect our hands!

How will we protect our hands so that they do not wear out during this period?

1- Alcoholic disinfectants and chemicals that we use to wash and clean our hands a lot during the covid 19 process remove the oil layer that protects our skin. This causes redness, drying, cracking and even wounds. When eczema starts, it makes us more susceptible to bacterial infections such as fungal infections. At this point, it is necessary to pay attention to the use of chemicals and disinfectants. It needs to be applied more on the inside of the hands and less on the upper parts of the hands, which have thinner skin. In other words, if we apply disinfectant or an alcohol cleanser to the palm 5 times, it is sufficient to apply it to the upper skin of our hands once.

2- In terms of cleaning, it is more correct to wash our hands rather than using disinfectants, and in environments where we do not have the opportunity to wash, it is more correct to turn to disinfectant. Since multi-colored and scented soaps may contain chemicals, I recommend using water and white solid soap for washing, and if there is no solid soap, white liquid soap should be used.

3- To protect your hands from bacterial infection and eczema, moisten them with a heavy cream such as Vaseline at least every 2-3 washes.

4- If you have a fabric glove, it is also restorative to wear this cloth glove over the cream and sleep by increasing its absorption. If we multiply examples like this, for example, after intensive creaming, wrapping it with cling film and waiting for half an hour or 1 hour will be beneficial. Instead of stretch film, a disposable glove without powder inside and with cut off fingers can be preferred.

5- If you have a crack in your hand, it is also a healing method to apply heavy cream around the crack and drop a drop of lemon juice in the middle of the crack. Lemon juice burns a little, but is the best way to repair the crack. The most important point to note here is that if there is eczema on the hand, we should not spread the lemon all over.

6- It is important not to skip wearing gloves while cleaning, and not to come into direct contact with bleach and other cleaners.
