What is Eczema?

Eczema is one of the most frequent types of dermatological diseases. It is characterized by redness, dryness, peeling and dropsy on the skin. We can identify the Eczema as a group of disease. Different types of eczema have been identified based on the cause of disease, site and type of disease.

What are the types of Eczema?

Atopic eczema (atopic dermatitis), seborrheic eczema (seborrheic dermatitis), hand eczema, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, stasis dermatitis and neuro-dermatitis are the most frequently encountered types of eczema.

Is Eczema contagious?

No, it is not contagious. Eczema cannot be passed to other people, however, genes and environmental factors are efficient in formation. Therefore, in a family with eczema susceptibility, children may also suffer from similar symptoms and complaints.

What are the symptoms and complaints in Eczema?

The most significant symptom is itching. The severity varies by condition. Skin dryness, redness, peeling, crusting and stretch marks are the most common findings. In early period of disease, small dropsy areas may be observed on skin.

Is Eczema treatable?

Yes, it is treatable. However, we cannot say that it will never occur again.

The treatment to be administered is effected by the age of patient, severity of symptoms/complaints, severity of eczema and treatments administered before.

Moisturizing creams containing topical cortisone, immunomodulator creams, oral antihistaminic and immuno-suppresant medications may be applied.

It is important any individual to realize under which conditions his/her eczema is triggered. When triggering factor is eliminated, the complaints will also decrease. Individuals with hand eczema complaints should avoid water, soap and chemical agents. Individuals with eczema complaints on eyelids should use cleanser, moisturizer and cosmetic products suitable for allergic skins. An individual with atopic eczema diagnosis should keep his/her skin moist.

Since the changes in weather conditions affect our skin especially during mid seasons, inflammations may occur.
