What is androgenetic alopecia?

Hair loss has a wide variety of reasons. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA); is a frequent form of hair loss observed in male and female individuals due to androgen hormones and genetic effects. It is observed in nearly half of men and about 20-25% of women. In women, the frequency of this disease especially increases in post-menopause period. It can only be determined by a dermatologist examination whether it is a male pattern hair loss or not. It is a problem which impairs the quality of life and causes psychological problems especially in women.

How is Androgenetic Alopecia (Male Pattern Hair Loss) observed?

Androgenetic Alopecia displays different clinical features in men and women. Forehead-scalp line moves back on forehead and vertex area in men. In women, forehead-scalp line does not move back but a partial hair loss occurs on vertex area. In Androgenetic Alopecia, terminal hairs gradually turn to vellus hairs.

How should Androgenetic Alopecia (Male Pattern Hair Loss) Treatment be?

Despite the fact that the ideal treatment in Androgenetic Alopecia is to stop the miniaturization process and to regain and recover the lost hair; the most realistic purpose of treatment among the available treatment alternatives that can be recommended to the patients is to decrease the hair loss rate rather than regaining/recovering the lost hair.

Biotin, Vitamin B12, zinc, iron level, thyroid function tests, hormonal tests should definitely be done. Despite male pattern hair loss, the deficiency should be compensated.

The most significant point in treatment is continuity. Since genetic factors are efficient, regular and continuous treatments are required rather than treatments for 3 or 6 months.

Hair lotions, oral antiandrogen, hormone-blocking drugs, PRP and mesotherapy may be applied in treatment. The treatment is personal and the requirements of each individual are different.
