Diabetic foot care; is a problem frequently encountered by diabetic patients and means any kinds of modification on foot of diabetic person.

Wound healing in diabetic patients is more difficult and takes longer times compared to normal individuals. When neuropathy (nerve involvement) occurs relied on diabetes, patients do not feel wound or pain. While ordinary people feel pain due to wound, diabetic persons may not have any sense of pain. This causes delays in diagnosis and treatment.

In the event of any sore or wound in a foot, diabetic person should see a doctor without delay. In the event of an infection, such diabetic persons should consult a physician, get bedrest, use special tools to avoid stepping on wounds and start to take antibiotics without any delay after the samples are taken from wound and blood.

Calluses occurred in foot of diabetic persons mean the risk of wound. If the diabetic person has a callus in his/her foot, he/she should not try to remove it using sharp objects such as knife, razor, scissors etc. and should not use callus medicine. Callus treatment should be performed in diabetic foot policlinics by using special equipment and tools. If the calluses are regularly removed using such techniques, the risk of new wound may be reduced at the rate of 50%.

  1. To prevent diabetic foot formation, it is very critical that diabetic person to regularly examine himself/herself.
  2. Foot hygiene is very significant.
  3. Dehydration/drying causes cracks and wounds and results in infections. For that reason, it will be appropriate to use creams containing urea for plantar and side parts of foot but not toe-web areas.

Orthopedic shoes not pressing the feet should be used.

It is important to consult a physician for any kinds of wounds. Treatment is personally planned for each patient.
